SA Mines and Energy Journal : February 2009
FEBRUARY/MARCH 2009 SA MINES & ENERGY JOURNAL 30 T he mine operation has its own fully equipped workshop which services all vehicles – including the 240-tonne rear-dump trucks which haul the coal to the surface. Production manager Mick Buckley says demand for dump truck tyres is so strong that other companies buy “retired” tyres from BBP and use them for their own operations, just to keep their trucks going. Descending to the bottom of the mine, you can see wisps of smoke and steam that dot the landscape due to a combination of steam and spontaneous combustion of coal, known as “sponcom”. The sight adds to the eerie feeling when down at the bottom of the huge, grey open cast pit.
