SA Mines and Energy Journal : Dec09-Jan10
17 DECEMBER 2009/JANUARY 2010 SA MINES & ENERGY JOURNAL FEATURE Rann and the Minister Paul Holloway a briefing on the WPA, in an effort to help explain their recent decisions. Defence has agreed to define and regularly review its core areas of operation where the presence of a mine would be considered practically incompatible with defence activities. Outside these core areas, exploration and mining activities will be reviewed by the Defence Department and PIRSA. "Provided the activities do not interfere with defence activities or give rise to unacceptable safety or security risks, access will not be unreasonably withheld, " Dr Heithersay says. State government representatives hope to visit the WPA to better understand how the area is being used, while SACOME is keen for senior defence personnel to visit a number of mines so they can understand the industry's needs. Dr Heithersay confirmed SACOME would be included in talks between PIRSA and the Department of Defence. The way many see it, mining and defence interests can be met; it just takes trust and communication -- both of which are proving harder to find than the minerals over which they are fighting.
