JUNE/JULY 2010 SA MINES & ENERGY JOURNAL 8 INDUSTRY NEWS Bight petroleum opportunity Applications are being sought for two offshore petroleum exploration permits in the Bight Basin. SA Minister for Mineral Resources Development Paul Holloway said the permits were in Commonwealth waters administered jointly by the Federal and South Australian governments. "The release of these two new blocks will no doubt focus national and international interest on South Australian petroleum opportunities and could potentially lead to multi-million- dollar investment in offshore exploration, " he said. Details of the prospectivity of these areas were outlined at the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association's annual conference in Brisbane in May. The 2010 Australian offshore release includes 31 new offshore petroleum exploration areas in Commonwealth waters around Australia. Changes to mine safety rules State government officials are reviewing submissions from the public consultation process on proposed changes to mining safety regulation in South Australia's mining industry. One of the aims of the process is to align the regulations with other jurisdictions, making life easier for companies with operations in other states. "It is widely accepted that the current regulation of mine safety in South Australia needs significant modernisation to better serve this growing industry" SafeWork SA executive director Michele Patterson said at the beginning of the process several months ago. "This program of work is part of a wider effort to achieve nationally consistent legislation in line with similar reforms in general occupational health and safety. "The consultation is designed to build upon efforts already underway through the National Mine Safety Framework, which seeks to achieve nationally consistent workplace safety legislation for the Australian mining industry. " The discussion paper contains a number of proposals resulting from discussions with technical advisers and other industry experts.
