SA Mines and Energy Journal : August-Sept 2010
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010 SA MINES & ENERGY JOURNAL 40 Bev Janssan saw many changes during her 24 years at the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy, and staff and members alike were sad to farewell her last month. "I think that Bev was one of the most dedicated workers I have known, " SACOME lifetime member Derek Carter said. "Her loyalty to the chamber, through good and bad times, was extraordinary. She provided a constant personal link through periods of huge change. " From early times, when the resources industry was getting organised and the chamber was just finding its feet, Bev brought people together. She facilitated events that enabled industry members to meet, and service providers to meet industry members. Colleague Stephanie Walker recalls the events she organised for members to give presentations on their projects, and talks from outstanding private or government speakers. "She knew who was 'hot' to draw in the numbers. An industry update always offered a frisson of excitement that it might, just might, be heralding an upsurge in exploration expenditure. " From humble beginnings, SACOME has grown during Bev's time to an organisation of about 12 staff and 300 members. "We remember when PIRSA wowed us all for the 2002-03 year by reporting that there had been private exploration expenditure of around $25 million, " Stephanie said. "You can imagine the impact on SACOME when that peaked in the 2008-09 year at $350 million!" Many will remember Bev for her warm nature and willingness to engage with staff and members at a personal level, taking a genuine interest in their wellbeing. Many of the members who joined during Bev's time are still with the chamber today. The space she has left within SACOME and the industry is large. EVENTS Farewell, Bev 2 1 2 2 4 3 1.
