OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010 SA MINES & ENERGY JOURNAL 18 PROFILE Kim McNamara, who has built a multi-faceted, multi-million- dollar business since leaving school at 16, credits common sense and being in the right place at the right time with his success. Heading remote area specialist KJM Contractors, the 39-year-old now employs 185 people in a business that has grown more than 37 per cent every year for the past eight years. The company, which services the mining, exploration and geothermal industries in Australia, has grown its turnover from $400,000 to $40 million over the past eight years. Its divisions now include Air Charter Services, Cooper Basin Operations, Rig Move and Rig Support Operations, Engineering, Mechanical Services, Hire (which includes full turn key camps including catering), Heavy Haulage, Ore Haulage, KJM Transport, KJM TSPT Roma Operations and Enviroflow Water Technologies. "We are the only one-stop shop remote area specialist in Australia, " Mr McNamara said. "We can answer all remote area needs with just one phone call. " It's a far cry from the business he was ready to sell eight years ago, a fortnight before he had secured a pivotal transport contract from Dominion Mining to supply logistic and transport services to the Challenger gold mine for its open-cut and underground mining operations. "We were awarded the job two weeks before I was shutting down. I had already sold all my equipment. I had given myself six months to get a direct contract to the industry in SA or had decided I would sell and change my life, " he said. The Dominion contract signalled the start of his 10-year plan. "It opened the door. After that, the rest is history. Within two weeks we had to find a place to operate from.
