SA Mines and Energy Journal : October-November 2010
23 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010 SA MINES & ENERGY JOURNAL EDUCATION The University of Adelaide's new Institute for Mineral and Energy Resources (IMER) officially launched this week, and aims to become a premier research and consultancy facility for the mining and energy sectors in the Asia-Pacific region. IMER is already well placed to make a significant contribution to the complex challenges faced by the mineral and energy industries. By bringing together expertise from disciplines across the University, the Institute is able to provide an integrated approach to research and consulting services for the mining and energy sectors. The creation of mutually beneficial partnerships between industry and the University's cross-disciplinary teams is integral to IMER's vision. Helping progress this goal is an advisory board made up of key university staff combined with a significant industry presence, including Mr Robert Kennedy (Beach Energy, Ramelius Resources and others), Mr Dean Dalla Valle (BHP Billiton) and Dr Paul Heithersay (PIRSA). IMER encompasses several research centres. The Centre for Tectonics, Resources and Exploration (TRaX), brings together scientists from the areas of Geology and Geophysics, Geographical and Environmental Studies, the Australian School of Petroleum, and the South Australian Museum. TRaX researchers are currently using innovative biogeochemical exploration methods to investigate new drilling targets in Tunkillia, South Australia. The Tunkillia Project is a joint venture with Helix Resources to target gold ore deposits, and an expanded program of biogeochemical sampling is now headed for the Tomahawk Prospect. Minotaur Exploration Ltd has endorsed these innovative exploration methods. TRaX geoscientists have also partnered with SA Water and the Department of Water to undertake geophysical surveys to locate groundwater resources for Aboriginal communities in remote and arid parts of South Australia. This project will determine optimal borehole locations for the development of sustainable groundwater resources. "Projects such as these are highly beneficial to industry, " says IMER Director Professor Stephen Grano. "Outcomes of these kind of partnerships, with our cross-disciplinary approach, have the potential to lower exploration costs while increasing the success rate of resource discovery, reducing energy costs in mineral production and increasing efficiencies in mines and oil and gas reserves. "Science, technology and social science researchers, working together, can make a far greater impact on the efficient and sustainable use of the world's mineral and energy resources than working individually or in small groups. " The Institute also includes the Centre for Energy Technology (CET), which aims to support Australia's transition from a high to low CO2 emission society, the South Australian Centre for Geothermal Energy Research (SACGER) and the Centre for Mineral Exploration Under Cover (CMXUC). Rewarding partnerships A new Institute within the University of Adelaide combines cross-disciplinary teams with industry for mutually beneficial outcomes.
